Nicki Dalton

After several years of travelling and living overseas, I am now enjoying emerging myself once again in my art. With a background in paint finishing (mirror frames, furniture etc) I am now enjoying as much time as possible in my home studio working on canvases in a more painterly interpretation.

I really enjoy taking the time to create the best ground possible, using multiple layers to achieve the finish I want. Often the colours I use in the layers are yellows, greens, oranges and reds – then they are subdued with browns; but the various pigments in the layers gives the ground depth. Because I also really love texture, I particularly strive for contrast in the finish of the ground and the texture of the dots. The lack of precision of measurements in my subjects is preferable to me – I enjoy the naiivity of imperfections and feel it gives my work a sense of freedom.

Many forms of indigenous art inspire me along with tribal art and rhythmic patterns found in nature. Simplistic man made objects using natural fibres are another inspiration for my subjects. The use of deep browns, blacks, umbers, and rich siennas are the colours I love to work with often contrasting them with a lighter coloured palette of dots which can give the subject a sense of floating on the canvas and of movement.

I live in Auckland with my husband and three children.
