Marie Sanders

Marie Sanders trained as a graphic designer at the Wellington School of Design, which at the time, taught all aspects of drawing - life, general, technical, perspective and fashion drawing. She then worked as a fashion illustrator with some of New Zealand's top fashion designers, and eventually discovered pastels, which is essentially a drawing medium. She found the special quality of pastels were ideal for life and figure drawing, enabling her to capture the movement of a figure in a quick sketch, and the detail of the face for a portrait. She also found the vibrant colours that are available in the pastel palette were perfect for landscape and still life paintings.

She teaches pastel classes at the Mairangi Art Centre and Uxbridge Art Centre at Howick, where her students learn the fundamentals of the pastel medium, creating still life, portrait and landscape paintings, and discovering the pleasure of painting with pastel. However, most of her time is now spent doing commissioned portraits, working from her home based studio on Birkenhead Point.

Marie has also recently illustrated a children's book, called 'Good-night Pumpkin', using pastels.
